The Next Generation of Astronauts Start Their Training in Fighter Jets

Hungary Today 2023.01.06.

Test flights with Gripen aircraft at the Kecskemét airbase of the Hungarian Air Force were used to examine the effects of acceleration (G-loading) on the astronaut candidates of the Hunor program, the news portal Index reported on Wednesday, 4 January.

Orsolya Ferencz, the ministerial commissioner for space research, said that the team of four original candidates from which the future Hungarian astronauts will be selected has been narrowed down and further information about them will be shared in January.

Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky said on his social networking site that he was proud that the astronaut candidates had been tested by the Hungarian Defense Forces.

“Today it is a strategic and security issue whether a country has access to space technology. In the case of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, we can clearly see that even an armed conflict can be decided by the data accessed by the respective parties. The majority of this data comes from space,” the defense ministry chief wrote.
