At the beginning of the week, the Minister of Energy visited the Paks II construction site, where he spoke optimistically about the possibility of the six nuclear power plant units operating side by side for at least 20 years.

“I wanted to see for myself how the construction is progressing, because the country is in great need of the new nuclear power plant,” said Csaba Lantos, after receiving information on the current works at the Paks II project from Gergely Jákli, President and CEO, László Gábor Kiss, Program Director, and Vitaly Polyanin, Vice President of ASE Rt.

The Minister of Energy noted that both the construction site and the Paks nuclear power plant are undergoing serious work. He stressed that the four units are needed in the long term, and their operating life is planned to be extended for another 20 years.

In the meantime, the new units will be completed, and we hope that the six units will produce in parallel for a good twenty years, and that we will be able to meet domestic electricity demand from a 100% carbon-free source,”

he stressed.

The minister recalled that there have already been sunny periods when the nuclear power plant and renewables have supplied 100% green energy to Hungarian consumers. As he said, this will be even more likely in the future, as the solar capacity has now exceeded 6,000 megawatts, three times the capacity of the nuclear power plant. “We believe in green energy,” noted Lantos, adding that “in Hungary, this means two things: renewable and nuclear energy.” The minister recalled that the European Union has also declared in its taxonomy directive that nuclear energy is green energy, as its operation does not involve greenhouse gas emissions.
