Mihály Munkácsy: The Condemned (1880)

The traveling exhibition of Mihály Munkácsy’s works was launched in 2005. So far, a total of forty-seven exhibitions have been held in cities all over Hungary, and some of them have been held twice, like in Székesfehérvár (central Hungary), where more than a decade ago, the exhibition welcomed its two millionth visitor, reported Magyar Nemzet.

On the occasion of the return of the exhibition, András Cser-Palkovics, Mayor of Székesfehérvár, announced that the city will welcome its six millionth visitor.

This means that the exhibition will be held for the third time.

“It is a strange situation that in the cities where the exhibition was reopened the second time around, interest not only did not decline, but even increased significantly,” Imre Pákh, art collector and owner of Mihály Munkácsy’s paintings, said. He added that we cannot say that every second Hungarian has seen this exhibition, because it has been shown in several major museums around the world,

including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, where one million people visited the Hungarian painter’s works in 2018.

Returning to Székesfehérvár, the city’s mayor noted that this beautiful round number is a gift to Mihály Munkácsy, who was born 180 years ago – because the master is immortalized through his paintings.

Fact

Mihály Munkácsy (1844-1900) was an internationally renowned figure of 19th century Hungarian painting. He began his career as a carpenter apprentice and fought his way up the ranks of professional painters. His canvases mainly depict Hungarian and European rural and middle class life with ‘sociographic accuracy.’ His romantic-realist style was greatly influenced by the French painter Gustav Courbet (1819-1877). Munkácsy’s main work is the Christ Trilogy of three panneaus, showing Christ in front of Pontius Pilate, on the Golgotha hill, and in front of the people of Judea (Ecce Homo).
