The Liszt Academy Surpasses World-renowned Music Institutions

Hungary Today 2024.04.11.

The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music has made a huge leap forward in the international ranking of one of the best-known higher education networks, Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), which was recently published. In the Performing Arts category, the academy finished ahead of such big names as the music universities of Leipzig and Berlin, King’s College London, and the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, reports Index.

The World University Rankings by Subject 2024, one of the best-known higher education rankings, published by analyst and services provider British Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), compares almost 1,600 universities in 55 subjects across five major disciplines. The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music has jumped to 22nd place in the Performing Arts category this year, after last year’s 51st-100th place in the category, and

thus stands out among Hungarian universities: no other Hungarian institution has done as well in its field of study,”

the institution’s website reads.

In the ranking, Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music joins prestigious institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, the Norwegian Academy of Music (Oslo), and the Conservatoire de Lyon (France), and outstrips prestigious institutions such as the Leipzig and Berlin universities of music, King’s College London, University Mozarteum in Salzburg, and other Central and Eastern European music academies.

The progress of the Liszt Academy is the culmination of many years of work, thanks to the visibility of international cooperation and research activities, as well as the world-renowned faculty,”

said Csaba Kutnyánszky, Vice-President of Education at the institution.

The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music was ranked 15th in the newly introduced, more narrowly focused music category.

The rankings are based on five criteria: the reputation of the institution; its standing in the academic world, measured by a survey of some 130,000 professionals worldwide (in which the Liszt Academy scored highly, with a score of 82 out of 100); employer recognition and international cooperation. As the performing arts is a specialized field, the proportion of publications and citations is weighted lower in this category.

“The musicological research of the Liszt Academy of Music (e.g. the work of the Central European Music History Research Group) and the scholarly activities of the Kodály Institute and the Liszt Ferenc Memorial Museum and Research Center are both considered to be outstanding internationally. Researchers at the Liszt Academy regularly take up invitations to study abroad, and the staff of the Liszt Museum play a leading role in, for instance, the networking and joint work of the international network of Liszt memorials.

The Kodály Institute is also world-renowned for the continuous development of the Kodály Method and its educational programs (Kodály Hub, Move mi Music, PRESTO). Many of the Academy’s teachers are internationally renowned performers, and its graduates are known to be internationally acclaimed, gaining admission not only to prestigious ensembles at home but also abroad.
