A combination of solar and nuclear energy can guarantee Hungary’s sustainable energy independence, according to the Foreign Minister.

The issue of environmental protection should not be approached from a political or ideological point of view, Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, stressed in his speech at the Sustainability Expo in Thailand in Bangkok on Thursday.

“We should not allow any political party or political movement to monopolize this issue, monopolizing the green cause will cost it its credibility,” he warned. Szijjártó stressed that countries should fulfill all of their obligations and commitments when it comes to the green agenda.

The Foreign Minister said that he was proud to represent the country that had been the first European Union Member State to ratify the Paris climate agreement, and the seventh in the world to pass the principle of climate neutrality into law, according to which Hungary aims to cut its CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030.

According to Szijjártó, a combination of nuclear and solar energy can guarantee Hungary’s energy independence and protect it from the “irrational volatility of prices on the international energy market.” He noted that Hungary has 40 years of positive experience with nuclear energy, which is a cheap, safe, and sustainable energy source.
