Balázs Orbán, the Prime Minister’s Political Director spoke about the importance of regional cooperation, the TurkStream and Hungarian-German relations.
“We stand on the threshold of an era where strong economic growth is based on knowledge, innovation and new solutions,” Balázs Orbán, the Prime Minister’s Political Director, told Index at the K8 – Economic Boom in the Carpathian Basin conference on Tuesday.
Balázs Orbán said the natural framework created by the Carpathian Basin should be used. “Cooperation with the Serbian government is the greatest achievement of the last 12 years, and it is strategically important for us. Now the task is to deepen the cooperation in further areas. We see that the Austrians are also very similar in their thinking in many fields,” he explained.
The politician pointed out that in the current global situation, the protection of critical infrastructures needs to be a priority, which requires international cooperation. He said the attack on the Nord Stream pipeline showed the need to ensure the protection of gas pipelines. “If something happens to TurkStream, it could ruin the whole economy of the region. The government would considers it a terrorist attack against the country if someone were to attack TurkStream,” he warned.
‘If someone blows it up or makes it inoperable, Hungary will regard that as a terrorist attack and will take action in response – as Serbia has earlier said it will, because the pipeline runs through their country,” Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told the Hungarian public radio last week.
Balázs Orbán was also asked about Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s recent talks in Berlin with current Chancellor Olaf Scholz and former Chancellor Angela Merkel.” It was Viktor Orbán who, although they had many disputes over many years, admittedly tried in public to persuade Merkel not to withdraw. Not necessarily because they agreed on everything, but because it was clear that a power vacuum would be created if the German chancellor left. Unfortunately, that is what happened,” he explained.
