The EU Leadership is Mismanaging Crises, Says State Secretary

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.01.05.

Brussels is making the wrong decisions, mismanaging the migration crisis and the war, and the EU is losing competitiveness, Barna Pál Zsigmond, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of EU Affairs, told Kossuth Radio’s Good Morning, Hungary! program on Thursday.

The state secretary said that the European Commission is making bad decisions, the European Council is mostly dominated by liberal leaders, and the liberal side of the European Parliament (EP) is making irresponsible statements and is involved in corruption scandals. He explained that MEPs have been caught red-handed with hundreds of thousands of euros, but accountability is slow, contradictory reports are coming in, and these MEPs under investigation are voting against Hungary in the EP.

The state secretary added that

an important objective of the six-month Hungarian presidency, starting on July 1, is to restore the EU’s global competitiveness vis-à-vis the U.S. and Asia, and to manage migration properly.

The Hungarian stand is to admit only those arriving in Europe who are genuinely entitled to protection, as opposed to the EU’s practice of admitting migrants first, then trying to verify their eligibility, and sending back those who are not, mostly unsuccessfully.

Asked whether Hungary could be deprived of the rotating presidency, Barna Pál Zsigmond said ‘no.’ “It is already certain that Hungary will hold the rotating presidency in the second half of 2024,” he said.

Zsigmond also said on M1 news channel that Europe’s competitiveness has deteriorated due to the war sanctions, and that the Brussels elite has no long-term strategic vision, and is only pushing the wrong decisions on migration.

The future of Europe is at stake in the EP elections on June 9. The continent needs to regain its old strength, to become once again the Europe of nation states as the founding fathers envisioned it. For this to happen, we need to be honest about the realities, for instance on war or migration,”

he added.

“Other countries are not as lucky as we are,” and “there is a liberal terror of opinion,” but if the voices of Hungarians are heard, there could still be a right-wing majority in Europe after the June 9 elections, he said. Among the priorities of the incoming Hungarian presidency, he mentioned the representation of Hungarian interests, the demographic situation, and the enlargement of the Western Balkans.
