Defense Forces Conduct a Multi-national Military Exercise

Hungary Today 2024.09.04.

The Hungarian Defense Forces hold a multi-national military exercise called “Moonstar 2024” in the first half of September at the Central Training and Firing Range (in Várpalota, western Hungary). The primary objective of the exercise of the Hungarian, Polish and Slovakian Territorial Reserve Forces is to bring together sub-units in the field, to check the readiness of the reserve soldiers and to assess their capabilities, honvedelem.hu reports.

With a total of 190 participants, the main purpose of the exercise is to lay the groundwork and start building platoon-level capabilities. The designated soldiers of the Territorial Protection Regiments, who have been in reserve of the Hungarian Defense Forces for several years, will learn about patrolling and area security. They will be trained in patrol base operation, attack, protection, and the operation of various checkpoints, and they will also carry out live-fire exercises. These joint international training exercises also contribute greatly to the military socialization of reserve personnel.

“In the first phase of Exercise Moonstar, we conducted an exercise with the Ohio National Guard, and now we are serving with Polish and Slovakian reserve forces.

We would like to expand cooperation in the future and have a foreign partner alongside each Territorial Protection Regiment. We carry out similar tasks, thus we can easily exchange experience,”

said Brigadier General Dr. László Drót, Commander of the Territorial Defense Forces Command at the opening of the event in Hajmásker (near Várpalota).

Territorial Protection Reservists are increasingly deployed in tasks where they need to have almost the same skills as their active counterparts. This year’s exercise will also provide an opportunity for the reserve soldiers to acquire skills that cannot be gained elsewhere.
