The Hungarian Defense Forces are waiting for applications for the Voluntary Military Service until the end of August, the Ministry of Defense announced. The program is open to young people who have not managed to enter higher education this year or are forced to postpone their studies, reports Honvédelem.hu.

Those who spend half a year in a rifle training course in one of the Territorial Defense Corps can earn 16 extra points for university admission next year. At the end of the second month, participants can also decide to transfer to a specialized training course, which if completed, will give them 32 extra points after six months. Those who continue for another semester are guaranteed 64 extra points, so they can apply for the next university admission procedure with even more than 500 points.

The admission requirement for the program is a simplified medical and psychological examination. However, those who opt for vocational training after the second month, such as tank driving or diving training, must also pass a higher level of health, psychological, and physical fitness tests.

In addition to military physical training, participants will also undergo formal and combat training, including shooting, among other areas. Experience in recent years has shown that these sessions provide the candidates with the attitude and mentality that they can use in their future studies. The ministry also said that

around 30-40% of those who have participated so far have chosen to go on to serve in the military.

Fact

In addition to the Voluntary Military Service for young people, there is also the possibility to join the army as a Voluntary Reserve, which involves a total of six months of military service over three years. The voluntary reservists receive a salary for the time served and a standby allowance for the rest, and can also choose between volunteering for military service in the Voluntary Operational Reserve or the Territorial Reserve.

As a Voluntary Operational Reserve, participants substitute contract or professional soldiers during their service. This means more serious and responsible tasks, and they can be called up to serve anywhere in the country. As a member of the Voluntary Area Defense Reserve, you will be a trained soldier, and will be called up to help the armed forces in your local area, if necessary.

This year, the number of reservists in Hungary could reach 12,000, more than twenty percent of whom are young people between 18 and 25.

Participants in the Voluntary Military Service receive a salary, one hot meal a day, and a travel allowance in addition to the points they receive for enrollment. Applications for the program, start on September 11, and can be submitted until August 31 at any recruitment office in the country or via the website of irányasereg.hu.
