The winner of the Hungarian Wine Academy’s Wine Producer of the Year in Hungary 2023 award, the most prestigious domestic honor for Hungarian winemakers, has been announced, writes Magyar Nemzet.
The award is not a recognition of the excellent quality of a wine, but is given for the outstanding performance of the winning winemaker over several years, for the consistent high quality of his wines, for their success at home and abroad, and for his efforts for the wine industry.
The five winemakers (in alphabetical order) who received the most votes in the nomination process:
This year’s winner was Tamás Günzer, a winemaker from Villány. The winner of the Wine Producer of the Year award said: “They started with a third of a hectare and grew from there to 75 hectares, but they no longer want to increase the estate.” He said that his son, who is the head winemaker at the Günzer winery, had indicated that he was getting tired of growing the estate. However, when a neighbor offers his land for sale, he cannot say no, he added.
Günzer expressed his pride that
a winemaker from Villány has won the award again after 25 years.
Above all, he thanked his father, who still had the chance to see his son win the award.
