Telekom Opens Its 5G Network to All Customers

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.05.25.

As the next step in Magyar Telekom’s mobile network modernization program, the company will increase its outdoor 5G coverage to 60 percent in terms of population from June 1, the telecommunications company announced in a statement sent to MTI on Wednesday.

Between June 1 and August 31, the company will automatically provide 5G access to its customers so that the nearly one million people who already have a suitable device and a mobile internet subscription can try the benefits of 5G.

They stressed that the company will continue its multi-year network modernization program this year. The modernization includes not only the active and passive radios, but also the entire infrastructure needed to house and operate them, they said.

Zoltán Pereszlényi, deputy commercial director, told Világgazdaság that customers will not have to do anything during the summer months, as

5G services will be activated automatically in and around Budapest, in county centers, around Lakes Balaton, Velence, and Tisza, i.e., in the main tourist destinations.

Magyar Telekom has invested 300 billion forints (804 million euros) in network expansion over the past six years, deputy technical director Lubor Zatko told the portal. He pointed out that 5G coverage has tripled in a year, and as customer demand and the number of connected devices continue to grow, investment will not slow down in the future. Lubor Zatko explained that they are able to provide gigabit speeds to 3.5 million households, representing 77 percent of the access points covered by Telekom. This is an outstanding figure in Europe, he added.
