Suspected Member of Islamic State under Arrest in Budapest

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.11.04.

The Metropolitan Court of Budapest ordered the temporary arrest of a Tajik man for whom his home country issued an international arrest warrant for the crime of mercenary activities.

According to the court’s statement, the man went to Istanbul with his father in April 2016 and then illegally crossed the border between Turkey and Syria and joined the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria. There, he was involved in war crimes against state forces and faces up to 12 years imprisonment in Tajikistan.

At Thursday’s hearing, the court only examined the conditions for extradition or provisional arrest for extradition. The man did not consent to his extradition.

The man’s provisional extradition arrest must be lifted if a proper extradition request is not received by 13 December, the court said. A further condition of the extradition is that Tajikistan should provide sufficient legal guarantees that no criminal proceedings will be brought against him other than the offense described in the arrest warrant, and a statement on whether there is a possibility of imposing the death penalty under the criminal laws of the country.
