Dominik Szoboszlai made history as he claimed his first Premier League title with Liverpool. The 24-year-old national team captain is the first player in Hungarian football to win the English league.
“I do not think I have even realized it yet. We have started celebrating a bit now, but I think we will continue later today,” the Hungarian told Spíler TV on Sunday evening after his side’s 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur secured their final success.
Szoboszlai plays for Liverpool in the number 8 jersey that was worn by Steven Gerrard. The club’s legendary player has never won the league title, but the Hungarian footballer says it does not mean anything. “He is a club legend, I think he did so much for the club that he should be remembered as a legend, even if he did not win the Premier League.
But he has won something I have not won, now that is the next goal,” he said, referring to the Champions League.
The young midfielder noted that he felt good in the game, although they started badly and went behind, but he said the reaction was “extra” from the whole team. Szoboszlai also provided two assists. “After taking the lead, it is very difficult to take the win away from us at home,” he said, adding that he fell a little bit short because he missed a chance, but was otherwise happy with the outcome of the game.
“Not many people can say they are Premier League champions,” he said, stressing that his aim was not just to make himself and those close to him happy and proud:
I send this success to all of Hungary.”

First of all, I would like to congratulate Dominik on this fantastic and historic success, as he is the first Premier League champion in the history of Hungarian football,”
Rossi said in a statement to m4sport.hu via the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ).
“I am sure that at Anfield, whose unique atmosphere I was able to experience myself this year, he will have a celebration with the fantastic Liverpool fans that will be an experience of a lifetime for him,” he stressed.
According to the footballer’s manager, Mátyás Esterházy, Szoboszlai is proof that it is possible to reach the elite from Hungary. He believes that his success has put Hungarian football on a higher shelf than ever before. “The fact that Liverpool have failed to win the title in recent years, and now, in Dominik’s second season, they have, shows very clearly the important role our captain played in winning this title,” he noted.
Szoboszlai played 32 Premier League matches in the 2024/25 season, starting in 26 of them, scoring five goals and providing six assists. With their 20th league title in Liverpool’s history, they have overtaken Manchester United at the top of the all-time league table. The Reds previously triumphed in the Premier League in 2020.
