FM Szijjártó: “I have an opinion about Swedish democracy, but who cares, I am not Swedish”

Hungary Today 2021.12.13.

Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said on Swedish television SVT regarding the situation of democracy in Hungary that the Orbán-led government had won the elections three times and the population supports its work. On the other hand, he himself does not want to interfere in the internal affairs of Sweden.

According to the Swedish reporter, democracy in Hungary is questioned by many on the international level. As an example, he mentioned the NGO Freedom House, according to which Hungary can no longer be considered a democratic country, and the Democracy Index of the University of Gothenburg comes to the same conclusion. According to Szijjártó, these claims are insulting, as questioning the maturity and nature of Hungarian democracy is unacceptable; otherwise, one would in principle question people’s love for democracy.

We have won three continous elections, people support what we have been doing. You can like or not like it because this is politics, but the democratic nature of what we are doing cannot be questioned because democracy means that what the government does is based on the authorization of the people.”

The minister added that he never wanted to judge other countries.

To be honest, I don’t care what the status of democracy is in Sweden because it is the Swedish people who should care about that. If the Swedish do not like that someone can be prime minister in Sweden even with one quarter of the votes of the members of parliament, I have an opinion about that, but who cares, I’m not Swedish.”
