Szijjártó and Rubio Talk About Peace in Ukraine and Leaving the ICC

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.04.16.

“This is a completely new era in our bilateral relations, now defined by friendship rather than hostility,” emphasized Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Péter Szijjártó, held a phone conversation with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio on Tuesday. He shared the details of the call on his social media page. They reviewed aspects of bilateral cooperation and the state of efforts to achieve peace.

Szijjártó also told Rubio that the Hungarian government “fully supports” former U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace efforts.

We hope, and we also ask Donald Trump to remain committed to peace, because for us Hungarians, it is extremely important that after more than three years of senseless and bloody war, peace returns to Europe.”

The minister added that unfortunately, many politicians in Europe are trying to undermine the path to peace and are constantly working to prevent the success of peace negotiations. It was mentioned that Marco Rubio assured Szijjártó that the United States is committed to establishing peace and “is doing everything possible to finally bring this three-year war to an end. (…) We hope that the U.S.-Russia negotiations will be successful.” Szijjártó also stated that last weekend’s developments in Ukraine further highlight the importance of ending the conflict as soon as possible.

“We also talked briefly about our cooperation with Israel, since Prime Minister Netanyahu flew from Budapest to Washington after his meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and was received by Donald Trump at the White House.

I also informed Marco Rubio that we have announced our withdrawal from the International Criminal Court, as this organization has become politicized, discredited itself, and we no longer see any reason to be a part of it,”

he said. The minister also mentioned that during the call, he spoke about how the Hungarian Parliament on Monday made several important amendments to the Fundamental Law in the interest of protecting children, including a provision stating that a person is either male or female.

“And we also discussed that Hungary will soon host CPAC at the end of May, and we reaffirmed our mutual commitment to further developing bilateral relations,” he declared. “Marco Rubio also expressed his appreciation for all the support and agreement the American administration has received recently from either the Prime Minister or other members of the Hungarian government,” he added.

“We had a good conversation that made it clear: a completely new era has begun in Hungarian-American relations, one defined by friendship and absolute agreement on our key issues,” he concluded.

Fact

Szijjártó later announced in Budapest that the U.S. Department of the Treasury has removed Antal Rogán, Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office, from the sanctions list. He says that this clearly proves that the winds are blowing differently in Washington now.
