Despite this year’s attendance of 416,000 visitors, the event was not profitable. “We are coming out of a negative period that lasted until approximately the end of 2022,” the organizers told MTI.
On the opening day of this year’s Sziget, Wednesday, August 6, Charli XCX was the headliner on the main stage, followed by Shawn Mendes the next day, with both days close to a full house. Other notable performers were Nelly Furtado, Post Malone, Kid Cudi, Papa Roach, Empire of the Sun and on the last day Chapel Roan closed the festival.
“Preliminary data show that this year’s audience at Sziget was slightly younger than last year. We are happy that the audience is getting younger, because it may be important for the future to be able to attract new generations to the festival,” Tamás Kádár, CEO of Sziget Zrt. said.
During a press conference held at the festival, it was announced that a large-scale development project will begin in the southern part of Óbuda Island with the aim of creating a cultural center. The first attractions of the large-scale development will open at the end of the year.
Krisztián Kiss, CEO of MultiKulti Zrt., also said at the time that the project is being developed in conjunction with the Sziget Festival, and that this part of Óbuda Island may be included in the festival next year.
“For now, we want to see exactly what will be realized within the framework of the project. Undoubtedly, it was not good for anyone that the southern part of Óbudai Island had been unused until now, with the buildings there falling into disrepair. If something valuable happens there, we will of course look into it and find common ground for cooperation,” said Tamás Kádár.
He added that it would still be important to do something about the K-bridge, which provides access to the Sziget Festival and has been in need of renovation for many years.
As he noted, this falls within the jurisdiction of the Budapest Municipal Government, “something has started, we know that a renovation plan is in the works, but whether there will be funding for it is up to them.”
