Survey Reveals the Year’s Most Popular Christmas Gifts

Hungary Today 2023.12.19.

MBH Bank has again this year published its representative survey on the Christmas gift-giving habits of the population. The survey reveals that on average six people give presents at Christmas. The most popular gifts this year are still sweets and books, but 36% of people give each other experiences and board games remain a popular choice for children, reports Magyar Nemzet.

More than half (54%) of shoppers start buying gifts 3-4 weeks before Christmas. Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the presents they buy: 41% of respondents contribute to protecting the environment by packaging and 11% by consciously buying.

The majority of people in the survey said they pay a lot of attention when choosing gifts.

22% of people surveyed know in advance what they want to buy for someone for Christmas, as do the proportion who look online or in shops before Christmas and decide based on what is on offer.

However, a large majority of respondents said they know roughly what they want to buy, but that the range of products in the shops also has a big influence on their choice (42%). More than half of respondents stressed that they prefer to spend time together rather than buying presents.

The majority of people surveyed (78%) plan ahead for the value of the Christmas presents they would like to give their loved ones, but 49% of people still think they tend to overspend during the festive season.

Compared to last year, the proportion of those who spend between HUF 20-30,000 (EUR 52-78) on presents has decreased this year, while the proportion of those who spend between HUF 50-100,000 (EUR 130-260) has increased,

according to the representative survey by MBH Bank.

When planning a festive budget, a significant proportion of people use the money they have set aside for shopping to buy presents (18%), but most people use their current salary to finance their planned purchases (34%). 9% of those surveyed use some form of credit line (credit card, overdraft, bank loan, quick loan) to cover their expenses.

On average, credit card holders plan to use HUF 27,000 (EUR 70) of their credit limit, which is HUF 10,000 (EUR 26) more than last year.

“Every year at Christmas time, MBH Bank examines shopping habits to track customer needs, preferences and habits, allowing us to tailor our products and services even more. As the research shows, at this time of year we are more likely to overspend and take out a loan to buy that special gift. However, it is also a good idea to think carefully when it comes to consumer credit during the festive season. Due to the different characteristics of each type of credit, it is important to choose the category that best suits the purpose of use,” emphasized Csaba Soós, Managing Director of Retail Business Development at MBH Bank.
