Surplus in Healthcare Budget to Drive Hospital Development in 2025

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.11.15.

The budget foresees a surplus of HUF 330 billion (EUR 811 million) in the health sector, meaning that a total of HUF 3,717 billion (EUR 9 billion) will be available for healthcare in 2025, the Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior said on Thursday at the opening of the medical and scientific congress of the Hungarian Association of Pediatricians in Debrecen in eastern Hungary.

Bence Rétvári, speaking at the opening of the three-day event, has 650 participants and almost 300 presentations, stressed that the greatness of a nation is not a quantitative but a qualitative indicator, which is true for Hungarians, because in medicine there have always been excellent people who were able to innovate and reorganize their field of medicine in their time.

The Secretary of State underlined that even in more fortunate parts of Europe than in our own, there is no such large-scale pediatric medicine, from primary care to hospital care, and not many countries can claim to have both a pediatrician and a health nurse. “However, this must not only be maintained, it must also be improved,” he stated, adding that this is why

next year’s budget foresees a HUF 330 billion surplus in the health sector, with HUF 3,717 billion to be spent on this.

Fifteen years ago, this amount was HUF 1,198 billion (EUR 2.9 billion), he said. He noted that he was confident that this would be used for ongoing and planned developments.

Bence Rétvári said that in the field of developments and innovations, “we can be proud of the free HPV (human papillomavirus infection) vaccination, which 425,000 students have received in the last ten years, but we can also be proud of what is happening in children’s hospitals.” As an example, he emphasized

  • painless infusions and needle-free vaccinations at Heim Pál National Pediatric Institute
  • or the robotic therapy at Bethesda Children’s Hospital.

The opening ceremony of the congress, covering all aspects of pediatrics, also included the issue of the centenary commemorative coin of the Hungarian National Bank and the centenary commemorative stamp of the Magyar Posta in honor of the Hungarian Association of Pediatricians. The commemorative stamp was issued in 35,000 copies at a face value of HUF 255 (EUR 0.6).

The Hungarian Association of Pediatricians is celebrating its 100th anniversary with the 100-year-old Pediatrics Clinic in Debrecen, the 100-year-old Pediatric Clinic of the University of Pécs, the 50-year-old Hungarian Child Neurology Association and the Hungarian Pediatric Association. The meeting was organized as part of a series of centenary events to mark the anniversaries.
