Summer Flower Paradise Awaits Visitors at Szeged Botanical Garden

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.06.19.

In addition to roses, lavender, and flowers from ‘grandmothers’ gardens,’ visitors can enjoy family programs, concerts, cultural programs, educational, and health-related presentations during the weekend in Szeged, at the university’s botanical garden, said director Anikó Németh.

The expert noted that for many years, one of the most popular programs in the botanical garden has been the Lavender and Rose Days, which this year have been expanded to include ancient Hungarian flowers and flowers that have become a permanent feature of domestic gardens over time. Thus, in addition to lavender and Turkish roses reminiscent of Provence, the event will feature symbolic and useful plants of the Hungarian people, and the programs will include Hungarian melodies, costumes, and games.

Visitors will encounter characteristic herbs such as rosemary, thyme, various types of sage, native ornamental plants, common zinnia, little hogweed, garden cosmos, and pelargoniums, that are of tropical origin but have now become a Hungarian ‘trademark,’ as well as tuberoses and dahlias that are becoming increasingly popular again.

Lovers of nature can learn about natural ways to stay healthy at educational presentations, whether through medicinal teas, fragrant natural soaps, essential oils, or syrups.

Dozens of varieties of lavender can be admired in the herb and spice garden of the botanical garden, from white to pink flowers, and from Pannonhalma to Tihany varieties.

A colorful sea of flowers welcomes visitors in the central part of the arboretum in the rose garden established in 1951.

A special feature of the collection is the display of historical roses, where visitors can see two dozen rose varieties with a long history, bred before 1867.

It was in that year that the first tea hybrid, bred by Jean-Baptiste André Guillot and named La France, became known, followed by a number of new varieties.

Currently, the Rose Garden and the historical rose collection together feature over 300 species and varieties, with nearly 3,000 plants on display.

More than 40 varieties of the so-called Márk roses, bred by Gergely Márk, can be seen in the collection, and roses bred by some of the world’s greatest breeders, including Meiland, Kordes, Tantau, David Austin, Poulsen, Lammerts, also adorn the garden.
