Heroes Square in Central Budapest

This year could be a successful one for the travel insurance market, with turnover in the first quarter already exceeding pre-Covid levels. However, within the tourism sector, bus and coach operators are in a serious situation: with very few bus drivers and a rapidly aging fleet, the situation is critical, said the 97th General Assembly of the Association of Hungarian Travel Agencies in Seville, where the main issues of the industry are being discussed, reports Világgazdaság.

The pre-pandemic period is returning; this year 700,000 tourists are expected to get off the hotel boats in Budapest. However, there are not enough buses to pick them up, because during Covid many providers have sold their fleet, most of the bus drivers are also nearing their retirement and there is no replacement – stated József Jakus, president of the National Association of Private Transport Operators, NIT Hungary.

However, the bounce-back in the pandemic-struck travel sector has been surprisingly rapid. Some tour operators survived the pandemic as intermediaries.

The choice of topics reflects the major issues in the travel industry, which cover both the property insurance of tour operators and the number and content of travel insurance policies. Surprisingly, the first quarter has already closed with a 38 percent increase in travel insurance sales compared to last year’s base period, which means that the results of 2019 have already been surpassed and this year could be another successful year,” said Róbert Nagy, Director of Mondial Hungary, presenting the sector statistics based on the latest official data.

The situation has consolidated, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of insurance, with

the number of people travelling with cover is increasing, already at 55%.

Customers are looking for better and more comprehensive insurance, they want easy and quick underwriting processes, with simple claims settlement, preferably digital.
