Hungarian students have achieved their greatest success in twenty years at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), finishing 8th out of 108 countries. This impressive result was reported by Eduline via the Tudományos Olimpikonok Facebook page, writes Demokrata.

The competition, held in Bath, UK, featured 609 students from around the world. All six members of the Hungarian team won medals, marking a significant achievement for the country.

Two students from the Fazekas Mihály Primary and Secondary Grammar School of Budapest stood out with exceptional performances:

  • Bence László Simon, a 12th-grade student, secured 5th place in his individual class with a remarkable 99.34 percent score, earning a gold medal.
  • Ábel Szakács, a 10th-grade student, also won a gold medal, further contributing to Hungary’s success.

This outstanding performance at the IMO is Hungary’s best result in the last two decades. Looking ahead, the Science Olympians announced that Hungary will host the Student Olympiad in Mathematics in 2027, providing an opportunity to showcase the country’s mathematical prowess on home soil.

At the same time, the state news agency, MTI reported that our students also won 4 medals (2 silver, 2 bronze) at the 56th International Chemistry Olympiad in Riyadh. 327 students from 84 countries competed. Hungary is placed 25th in unofficial rankings.
