During his visit to New Delhi, Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, engaged in discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Hungary and India.
Péter Szijjártó emphasized the importance of building close cooperation with the subcontinental country, citing its projected economic growth and increasing global influence as key factors. Reflecting on his meeting with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister Szijjártó highlighted the shared values and collaborative spirit between the two nations.
My friend (Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar) and I have met a lot and we have very good cooperation,” he emphasized.
Economic cooperation between Hungary and India has seen significant growth, with trade turnover surpassing one billion euros last year. The minister pointed out the substantial investments made by Indian companies in Hungary, along with the rising number of Indian students opting to study in Hungarian universities. Looking to the future, he emphasized the need for a direct air link between the two countries to further bolster economic ties.
In addition to economic discussions, Mr. Szijjártó and Indian officials addressed energy cooperation, particularly in light of EU sanctions posing challenges to energy security.
We consider both security of supply and reasonably priced supplies important, and therefore neither India nor Hungary has given up energy cooperation with Russia, because we see that the most vocal critics of world politics are themselves buying Russian energy covertly or by detour,” he said.
Szijjártó stressed the pragmatic approach adopted by both Hungary and India in securing affordable energy supplies, highlighting the importance of maintaining cooperation with Russia in the energy sector. Transitioning to green policies, Minister Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s commitment to environmental protection while rejecting extremist green ideologies:
In Hungary we say yes to the green transition, but a clear no to extreme green ideologies.”
Speaking at the India Europe Business and Sustainability Conclave, he emphasized the importance of balancing economic development with environmental protection, advocating for pragmatic environmental solutions.
The foreign minister’s visit to India showcased Hungary’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations and pursuing pragmatic green policies that balance economic growth with environmental protection. The discussions held during the visit underscored the mutual benefits of cooperation between Hungary and India in various sectors.
