During a several-day official visit to the United States, Lieutenant General Ferenc Kajári, Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff, held a meeting with Major General John C. Harris, Commander of the Ohio National Guard to deepen bilateral relations, and also visited the strategic command shaping the future of NATO, the Allied Command Transformation (ACT) in Norfolk.

Lt. Gen. Kajári reviewed the activities and main directions of the Command (responsible for leading the strategic warfare development of military structures, forces, capabilities, and doctrines) with General Chris Badia, Deputy Supreme Commander at the ACT, reports Honvedelem.hu. The Lieutenant General presented the results of the modernization process of the Hungarian Defense Forces, with special emphasis on capability development efforts and alignment with allied requirements.

Lieutenant General Kajári was briefed on the tasks of the Hungarian soldiers serving in Norfolk, and he spoke to them about the current tasks and processes of the Hungarian Defense Forces in the framework of a staff meeting.

Afterwards, Lt. Gen. Kajári traveled from Norfolk, Virginia to Columbus, home of the Ohio National Guard headquarters and several important installations.

After discussions with Major General John C. Harris to assess bilateral cooperation and identify directions for development, Lt. Gen. Kajári emphasized that the 30 years of partnership with the Ohio National Guard has greatly helped the Hungarian Defense Forces to develop and build its cooperative capabilities, “whether it is cyber defense, drone technology, or space operations. Our aim is to make our cooperation even closer and more effective,” he stressed.

This is not only part of our past, but also part of our future, playing a key role in developing the capabilities of the Hungarian Defense Forces, in federal integration and in preparing for the warfare of the future,”

he said.

On the last day of the visit, the Hungarian delegation visited the annual “Best Warrior Competition” complex patrol competition organized by the Guard, in which Hungary was represented by four reserve soldiers, two professional soldiers, and two team leaders. For several years, the soldiers representing Hungary have been taking part in the competition and comparing their strength and preparedness with soldiers from allied and partner nations.

Fact

The partnership between the Hungarian Defense Forces and the Ohio National Guard goes back over 30 years. The framework was established by the U.S. Department of Defense’s State Partnership Program, launched in 1993, an initiative that links the National Guard of each U.S. member nation with the armed forces of partner nations for mutual benefit.

Hungary was among the first to join the partnership program on July 14, 1993, in cooperation with the Ohio National Guard. The reason for this pairing was most probably the large number of American citizens of Hungarian origin living in the cities of Ohio (Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus, Dayton).
