The cold front has reached Hungary. After the heatwave, the bad weather arrived with summer showers in the West and heavy rain in the East and the Great Plain, which was much needed after the drought, M1 News reported.
In Somogy county, heavy rain was replaced by summer showers. “We have been missing this rainfall because I have corn and I have grains. In fact, we just received nine mm of rainfall today, which we were really looking forward to,” said a local farmer.
During the morning hours, the heavy storm moved quickly across the western half of the country, and the heat of the past weeks disappeared.
“We have not had any kind of precipitation at all for weeks. Now, thankfully, we are still getting a little bit of rain in the morning, so we are hoping for a little bit more. The air has also cooled down a lot,” said László Bertók, mayor of Vése in Somogy county.
After the storm quickly passed, holidaymakers ventured out to the southern shore of Lake Balaton. The storm reached the eastern part of the country in the early afternoon as well. The cold front poured huge amounts of rainfall onto the Great Plain.
“The cold front also reached Békés County, preceded by a huge heat wave in the morning. At 2 pm the rain started to pour down- showers, thunderstorms, lightning in places,” reported the correspondent.
The storm did not spare Debrecen either. There were moments when water was pouring down the roads.
“The cold front arrived in Debrecen with strong winds and a lot of rain, and due to the thunderstorms, many outdoor events in the afternoon were canceled, for example, the street music days were held at a different time,” said the M1 correspondent.
The Paddling across Lake Balaton event was announced for Saturday in Zamárdi, but due to the bad weather, it was canceled. Although the organizing committee has been in contact with the National Meteorological Service and the Balaton Water Police Station, a stronger thunderstorm than previously forecast hit the area, 24.hu reported.
However, temperatures are forecast to rise day by day in the first days of August.
