President Tamás Sulyok

President Tamás Sulyok paid an official visit to Slovakia. He met with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini, Chairman of the Slovak Parliament Richard Raši, and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, and held talks with them before laying a wreath at the “Gate of Freedom” in Bratislava.

A meeting with representatives of the Hungarian community in Slovakia took place at the Hungarian Embassy in Bratislava (Pozsony). The head of state said that this community has a wealth of experience and good qualities. If the people living here love and serve this community, if they work honestly for it and spare no effort for its future, then the Hungarians of Slovakia have a future many would envy.

The nation knows no state borders,”

the president said, adding: “Respect for the family, the irreplaceability of national identity, the preserving power of morality, and the importance of serving our communities should be a shared experience written in our hearts.”

According to Tamás Sulyok, there is a mysterious attraction that draws us back to the territories of historic Hungary lost in 1920, in this case to the former Upper Hungary (Felvidék). “The fate of the Hungarians living here is important to us,” he emphasized. The common goal is the preservation and future of this part of the nation, said the head of state, adding that dialogue between neighboring peoples is important. It is often astonishing how little we know about each other, he stated,

even though, as János Esterházy said, Hungarians and Slovaks live in a historical community of destiny.”

During the meeting with his Hungarian counterpart, Peter Pellegrini recalled that Hungary contributes to the protection of Slovakia’s airspace, is Slovakia’s fourth most important economic partner, and that there are a number of joint projects between the two countries.

For example, the agreement on cross-border healthcare is nearing completion, and the prospects for cooperation in advanced technologies such as electric cars are promising.

The deficit caused by the interruption of gas supplies from Ukraine at the beginning of the year has been largely offset by the Hungarian-Slovak pipeline, he emphasized, making it clear that the two countries are also in agreement on the Commission’s initiative to ban imports of Russian energy from EU Member States (RePowerEU).

Regarding the Visegrád cooperation, Pellegrini said that the Hungarian presidency of the V4 had begun and he hoped that this would bring about a renewal of this very important alliance. “We have never achieved such good results as when we were members of the V4,” the Slovak Head of State emphasized.
