Popular Minister to be reassigned to European Parliament duties in BrusselsContinue reading
Judit Varga, Minister of Justice, recently announced that she will step down from her position as of July 31 to focus on the campaign for the European Parliament elections in 2024. In the elections, Varga will possibly lead the election list of the governing parties. Now it has also emerged who her successor as minister will be, reports Magyar Nemzet.
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has taken note of Judit Varga’s intention to resign, press chief Bertalan Havasi announced on Wednesday. He added that the prime minister has nominated Bence Tuzson, State Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, for the post of justice minister.
Bence Tuzson is 51 years old, a Budapest-born politician with a law degree. He has been a Member of Parliament since 2014, and has won in the 5th constituency of Pest County three times.
The MP was first appointed as state secretary in 2015, becoming State Secretary for Communications in the then newly-formed Prime Minister’s Cabinet Office. From 2018, he was State Secretary for the Civil Service in the Prime Minister’s Office, and from January 3, 2020 he strengthened the Cabinet Office as Government State Secretary.
Bence Tuzson has already responded to the request for the ministerial position, writing on his Facebook page that he was extremely honored to be given the task.
“I will do my utmost to serve the security and everyday life of the Hungarian people in my new mandate as a member of the government,” he said. He thanked Minister Judit Varga for the unparalleled and exemplary work she had tirelessly done in recent years and congratulated her on her new mandate, wishing her every success.
Tuzson asked the prime minister to take EU affairs away from the ministry, which would then operate within a clear, traditional Justice Ministry structure.
In a statement to MTI on Thursday, the politician also said that under his leadership, the ministry would focus on protecting legal sovereignty and reviewing case law.
Regarding the review of case law, he stressed that the administration of justice must always put the people’s perspective first. It is important to continue to develop a swift and efficient administration of justice, while preserving the independence of the judiciary, so that people have a clear jurisprudence, he emphasized. Tuzson indicated that as minister, he would like to consult with representatives of the court system on this and intervene accordingly, if necessary by legislative means.
