In three years, more than 10,000 students have participated in the university startup program, the Deputy State Secretary for Innovation of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation said on Wednesday in Kápolnásnyék, in Fejér county.
Speaking at the opening of the Hungarian Startup University Program (HSUP) Demo Day conference organized within the framework of EFOTT, László Bódis noted that the university startup program was launched in 2020, to encourage young, innovative Hungarians to start a business.
During the three academic years, almost 500 teams have developed their startups,
around 2,000 students have received more than HUF 1.3 billion (EUR 35 million) in grants, and 49 projects have reached Demo Day, where they were able to present their ideas to professional investors.
The Deputy Secretary of State emphasized that in the light of experience so far, the program would be changed from September, hence the best teams would receive seed money to enter the market, with a smaller grant and a new system whereby
not only universities would choose the ideas they liked best, but professional investors would also have a say in the selection.
In addition, a more innovative and substantive curriculum in English will be developed and rolled out in a few universities and then distributed to all universities from September 2024.
Bódis recalled that in the first semester, students will receive e-learning training that will provide them detailed knowledge about startups, and how to launch and run them. At the end of the semester, a one-page project proposal will be submitted, and the top 200 ideas in the country will receive a scholarship in the second semester to develop their startups in detail, with the top 20 teams going through to Demo Day.
The Deputy Secretary of State underlined that in the last three years there have been a few projects that are already generating revenue, but they would like to see many more ideas.
