Standalone World War I Biplane Arrives at Szolnok Aviation Museum

Hungary Today 2024.08.27.

A significant piece of Hungarian aviation history will be on display at the RepTár Szolnok (Central Hungary) Aviation Museum starting August 31, as part of their annual picnic event. The museum will unveil the Hungarian Lloyd C.I warplane, reports Világgazdaság.

This biplane, the first military aircraft manufactured in Hungary, was built in May 1914 at the Hungarian Lloyd factory near Budapest. It stands out as a prototype and is the only surviving First World War (WWI) aircraft in Hungarian public collections that retains its original main parts. The Lloyd C.I not only set several world altitude records during its time but also saw service in World War I, where it endured multiple hits that are still visible on its wings and fuselage.

After undergoing various overhauls, it was restored to its current condition in April 1997 and has been in storage since 2015.

Fact

The Lloyd C.I, a pioneering Hungarian biplane, was developed by Hungarian Lloyd in 1914 as the first military aircraft produced in Hungary. It featured a wooden frame with a 75 hp engine, a top speed of 160 km/h, and could carry a 100 kg bomb load. Used in WWI, it saw service primarily in reconnaissance and light bombing roles, setting several altitude records before being retired in 1918.

The arrival of the Lloyd C.I warplane represents a significant addition to the museum’s collection. Its importance lies in both its historical importance and its rare status as a surviving First World War aircraft, recognized internationally for its records.
