Independent spirit continues to shape Hungarian foreign and domestic policies, as demonstrated in a recent interview with Balázs Orbán, the Prime Minister’s political director, on BBC’s Hard Talk program.
As the country positions itself against dominant global narratives, it firmly upholds its sovereignty and national interests. With a distinct voice on international issues, Hungary’s alternative approach to global crises and its focus on pragmatic solutions are driving headlines.
In terms of foreign policy, the path is diplomacy and pragmatism, especially concerning the war in Ukraine.
While European leaders push for continued military support, Hungary advocates for negotiations with Russia, arguing that the current strategy has led to unnecessary loss of life and worsening conditions for Ukraine. Hungary offers humanitarian support but resists military involvement, framing its actions around national interests.
During the last 2 and half years, the warmongering liberal elites just pushed the – war further. Now we have an enormous number of people dying, Ukraine losing territories, and a serious risk of escalation.
So clearly, the Western strategies do not work. We have an… pic.twitter.com/UbnOg8SXP8— Balázs Orbán (@BalazsOrban_HU) September 12, 2024
“We Hungarians do not like to be dictated to from outside,” Mr. Orbán remarked, highlighting the country’s deep-rooted desire for self-determination. He criticized the “progressive liberal elite” for imposing their views on others, stressing that Hungary values pluralism and the importance of every member state’s voice being heard in Europe.
He firmly added, “we do not want to give up our sovereignty.”
The country’s vision in foreign policies sharply contrasts with the West’s approach. Criticizing European leaders for prioritizing military aid over diplomacy, the PM’s political director stated, “more than half a million people have been killed, Ukraine has lost more territory, and there’s a daily risk of escalation.” He firmly believes that continuing the war is not a solution, arguing instead for a strategy that saves lives and preserves national interests.
Instead of giving up, and inviting migrants to our societies—just like the liberals are doing—, we should put more effort in #family policies. Here, in #Hungary, we still believe that family policy can work. And it’s not just about incentives, it’s a complex system in which one… pic.twitter.com/pjjWNJkHIv

On immigration and energy issues, Balázs Orbán emphasized Hungary’s refusal to follow the paths of other Western nations. “We will not let Hungary down on illegal immigration,” he stated, stressing the government’s commitment to protecting the country’s borders. Regarding energy supplies, Mr. Orbán underscored that
Hungary’s policy is driven by practicality, not ideology, saying, “whether oil comes from the West or East makes no difference to us.”
According to Balázs Orbán, Hugary’s foreign policies are driven by national interest, a rejection of external pressure, and a clear commitment to diplomacy over conflict. As Hungary navigates global challenges, it continues to assert its sovereignty and prioritize the well-being of its people.
