Sovereignty Protection Act: EU’s Response Addressed by State Secretary

MTI-Hungary Today 2024.02.08.

According to Barna Pál Zsigmond, Parliamentary State Secretary of the Ministry of European Union Affairs, the EU is attacking the Sovereignty Protection Act because “its purpose is to prevent foreign intelligence gathering.”

In a recent video posted on his Facebook page, the state secretary says it is now a fact that George Soros was the main supporter of the “dollar left” in the 2022 campaign.

He adds that the new law makes it a crime to accept campaign money from abroad.

The state secretary stressed that 98 percent of Hungarians agreed with the tightening of campaign contributions in the National Consultation, and that the government will stand by the law to protect sovereignty.

As previously reported by Hungary Today, the European Union has launched infringement proceedings against Hungary over the law, effective from December 2023. The government has received a formal letter of notice from the European Commission as part of the procedure.
