Sovereignty Is Becoming a Value, Says House Speaker

MTI-Hungary Today 2025.03.07.

The unipolar, liberal world order is over, the majority of the world does not share the “dogmatic idiocy” of the liberals, and is strong enough in all areas to express its disagreement, the Speaker of the National Assembly said on M1’s 48 Minutes program on Thursday evening.

László Kövér stressed that what seems to be unfolding is that the world is becoming multipolar, sovereignty is becoming a value, and the West’s democratic model is largely met with neutral indifference or opposition around the world. He expects that in the short term, Hungary will be subjected to “an angry attack of frustration” from the EU, even more powerful than thus far. If the Western elite thinks the EU must be broken up and that it must start with us, by not respecting Hungary’s most basic interests, then the European Union will fall apart, he said. At the same time, the EU in its current form is unsustainable, he pointed out.

The Speaker of the National Assembly also assessed relations in the parliament, referring to the opposition parties. About right-wing Jobbik, he said that it had taken its own inglorious path, even though it had the opportunity to choose a different one. He stated that

the Our Homeland Movement (Mi Hazánk Mozgalom) had been relatively successful in trying to return to Jobbik’s original platform and at the moment they still seemed to be a viable group.

As for Péter Magyar, leader of the main opposition Tisza party, he said that it is very difficult for him to deal with the lack of human quality that this man shows towards his own family, his voters, and his colleagues. It follows directly that he is no more loyal to his country than he is to his wife, his children, his ex-girlfriend, his fellow MEPs, his elderly constituents, or women in general, he emphasized.

The Speaker pointed out that

even in 1990, there was no minimum consensus in parliament, and since then the situation has radically deteriorated, with parliament’s role in terms of political publicity being reduced.

He noted that he did not see much of a turnaround, after which there would be a return to the happy peacetime and a national plenum imbued with a normal debate culture. Unfortunately, he said, this is not the direction of events elsewhere either, but it is not the fault of the MPs, who are to blame for giving in to the spirit of the times.

On the possible banning of Pride, Kövér recalled that the legal environment had so far not allowed the government to try to limit the “arrogant, deliberately scandalous thing they had christened Pride Day or Pride Month.” He added that the majority had the right not to tolerate this movement. He stressed that they wanted to create the legal possibility to keep it within minimum limits. In connection with this, Mr. Kövér also noted that with the change of US president, it has become clear that a kind of culture-changing, aggressive policy has been tried to be imposed on us through NGOs with US public money, plus “Soros’ private money” or whatever he manages.
