The Ministry of Energy has reported a 12-fold increase in the capacity of domestic industrial solar power plants compared to five years ago, and a doubling of their output in the past two years. They stressed that including small power plants, Hungary has already exceeded its target of 6,000 megawatts of total solar capacity by 2030, under the National Energy and Climate Plan, bringing the new target to 12 gigawatts.

The Ministry of Energy said on its Facebook page that the 4,030 megawatts reported by the Hungarian Transmission System Operator Company (MAVIR) in November represent a 12-fold increase in capacity compared to the end of 2018. Industrial green power producers passed the 2,000 milestone in 2022, and the 3,000 milestone last year, with quarterly production peaking in August this year at 3,346 megawatts.

They added that the total capacity of solar plants over 50 kilowatts last year was the highest ever, with a total of 776.8 megawatts.

In addition, the increase for the first eleven months of this year is already 728.5 megawatts, making it possible that the best annual figure ever will be surpassed.

It was pointed out that, including car manufacturers, the installed capacity of industrial-scale plants amounts to 4,758 megawatts. Even without the small domestic-scale plants, the more productive solar PV (photovoltaic) systems have already surpassed the 1 gigawatt expansion in 2024.

Hungary reached its target of 6,000 megawatts of total solar capacity by 2030, six years earlier and has now exceeded it by more than a fifth.

That is why the Ministry of Energy has set a new target of 12,000 megawatts for the beginning of the next decade in the revised National Energy and Climate Plan.

The ministry emphasized Hungary’s aim to become a leader in the production and storage of green energy for homes, industry, and vehicles. The rapid expansion of solar panels will strengthen energy sovereignty and help make climate ambitions a reality. Fossil-based energy production will fall by 18 percent in 2023, while renewables will increase one and a half times.
