Small Relief for Motorists as Fuel Prices Drop

Barbara Bene 2023.02.22.

From Wednesday, Hungarian motorists will once again pay less for fuel. The wholesale price of petrol and diesel will both fall, and the price change will be reflected in the pricing at individual stations.

Petrol will cost 3 forints less per liter gross for petrol stations, while the price of diesel will fall by 7 forints per liter. As a result, the average price of 95-octane petrol will be 616 forints (EUR 1.60) per liter and that of diesel 624 forints (EUR 1.62) per liter, reports Hungarian refueling website Holtankoljak.hu. However, these are only average prices, and prices at individual stations may differ.

Despite the reductions, prices remain high, at least compared to the earlier capped price, which motorists could enjoy until December, when fuel cost 480 forints (EUR 1.25) per liter. Now, market developments are determining prices in Hungary, which means higher costs for motorists. According to some surveys, higher prices are making motorists consider whether or not to drive, and some of them have been using public transport more since the abolition of the capped price.

Although Hungarians were shocked in December when the price of fuel suddenly went up by almost 200 forints, there have been a number of price reductions since then. Two weeks ago, there was also a big drop in prices, with the purchase price of petrol falling by 10 forints and diesel by 25 forints.

However, experts are not yet optimistic about the global situation, with reports in January suggesting that fuel prices could rise significantly in the second half of the year. Whether this will eventually happen is difficult to predict in the current uncertain situation, but for the time being motorists can be happy with lower prices.
