Slovakia sent 38 new police officers on Monday to help Hungary protect the Serbian-Hungarian border, which is affected by illegal migration.

Slovak police officers have been protecting a 40-kilometer stretch of the border together with Hungarian police since last October. The new team replaces the Slovak contingent deployed in October, Slovak news agency TASR reports.

The Slovak police officers are expected to remain in Hungary until the end of February, although the deployment may be extended if necessary. They will patrol the Kiskunhalas area in joint teams with their Hungarian counterparts.

We remain convinced that the protection of the Schengen external borders is a much more effective measure than the introduction of controls at the internal borders of the European Union,”

Slovak Interior Minister Roman Mikulec said.

Slovak police chief Stefan Hamran also assessed the protection of the Schengen external borders as an effective measure, and pointed out that with a “serious guarding” of the external borders, it has been proven that there are significantly fewer problems at the internal borders due to illegal migration.

Ninety percent of border crossers come from Serbia, which is why protecting the Serbian-Hungarian border is particularly important, Hungarian President Katalin Novák said during her visit to the border in December.
