Shower of Medals at the Wheelchair Fencing European Championships

The Hungarian delegation had a successful performance at the Wheelchair Fencing European Championships last week (March 5-10) in Paris. The team took home a total of five medals. The Championships were a highlight of the Paralympic qualification period.

Defending his title on Thursday, the Hungarian national team’s first gold medal in the French capital was won by foil fencer Richárd Osváth (Category A), who beat Italy’s Emanuele Lambertini 15-9 in the final. According to the Hungarian Paralympic Committee, Éva Hajmási finished third on the same day, also winning a medal in sword (category A).

Saturday was another successful day for fencers.

Éva Hajmási won in épée, category A, and Boglárka Mező was second in category B, also in épée.

On Sunday, the last day of the European Wheelchair Fencing Championships, the Hungarian women’s épée team won the gold medal. According to the Hungarian Paralympic Committee, the team of Éva Hajmási, Zsuzsanna Krajnyák, Boglárka Mező and Anna Nádasdy confidently reached the final, where they beat the Ukrainians 45-37.

The Hungarian wheelchair fencing national team thus finished the European Championships with five medals: three gold, one silver, and one bronze.

Hungary has 18 quotas for the Paralympics, organized between August 28 and September 8. They have won seven in swimming, four in kayak canoeing, two in shooting, and one each in table tennis, athletics, archery, dressage, and cycling.
