Alleged ANTIFA activist, Ilaria Salis, was arrested in February 2023, accused with her accomplices of severely beating people in various locations in Budapest, whom they assumed of being participants in a far-right memorial event. Péter Szijjártó addressed a question regarding the Antifa violence during a lecture at Chatham House in London.
According to Magyar Nemzet, when asked about the embarrassment of having a Member of the European Parliament incarcerated in Budapest while Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the European Union, the Minister responded:
“What is truly embarrassing to me is how this case is being handled, the media’s approach, and how Italian political circles are dealing with it. Frankly, I am appalled. It is appalling because there is defense for someone who came to Budapest with the intent of causing fatal harm on the streets.
Are we really protecting such individuals? Do we consider them heroes? They came with the clear intention of assaulting people in public,” the Minister continued.
“Unable to find far-right individuals, they targeted those dressed in black with short hair, assuming them to be far-right, and openly attacked them,” Péter Szijjártó stated.
“Have you seen the images of these victims with the injuries? They were nearly killed. Look at their wounds, their bodies.
This woman came with that malicious intent, and they brutally attacked these people. And now she is being hailed as a hero,” he argued.
“What kind of world are we living in? And then we are criticized for how we handle someone who came to Hungary with such malicious intentions. I regret that we have to detain her, but what’s the alternative? Display Ms. Salis’ (statue) in Heroes’ Square to demonstrate that this is the future of Europe?” concluded the politician.
