Ships to Form Unique Spectacle on the Danube to Kick Off Boating Season

Hungary Today 2025.04.24.

On Sunday April 27, the Budapest passenger boatmen will hold their traditional season-opening “Kirajzás” (Swarming). The free event will see some 28 passenger ships – with thousands of passengers on board – leave the ports at the same time to form a unique spectacle on the Budapest stretch of the Danube, Turizmus.com reports.

The organizers would like to showcase the values of the 205-year-old “Pest-Buda” shipping industry. The “Kirajzás” will include all passenger ships of the capital, but due to the limited capacity of the passenger ships, free tickets are required via the Cooltix website. The Passenger Boatmen’s Association has invited children’s homes and NGOs to join the event, so that hundreds of children can enjoy the Budapest cruise alongside individual visitors.

Last year’s cruise was also extremely popular, with more than 4,000 passengers taking part, which also shows that there is a huge demand for passenger transport on the Danube, not only among foreigners but also among Budapest residents and domestic tourists.

In addition to the tourism aspect, the organizers also want to draw the attention of Budapest decision-makers to the fact that due to unenforceable amendments to the Danube Riverfront Construction Code adopted by the previous Budapest administration last spring, this year’s cruise tourism season will start with complete uncertainty.

The amendment to the Code provides for a radical change in the use of the capital’s harbors, the Passenger Boatmen’s Association pointed out. The new regulation has significantly reduced the number of harbors in some parts of the Danube section of the capital, and has designated places that are not really suitable for the establishment and operation of harbors. The fact that no new port has been created since then proves the unviability of the amendments to the Code, their statement read.

In the Association’s view, uncertainty remains, the Code should be revised, and the capital should ensure that passenger shipowners have valid port permits for the transitional period so that they can continue to operate properly until the new system is in place. They also argued that a safety impact assessment should be carried out and offered to work in partnership on a new amendment to the Code in the hope that this time, the new concept would not only listen to the professional arguments but also incorporate them.
