Several Flights Cancelled between Germany and Budapest due to Bad Weather

Hungary Today 2024.01.18.

According to the German Meteorological Service (DWD), there is a threat of freezing rain and heavy snowfall in Germany on Wednesday and Thursday. Fresh snow up to 20 centimeters thick is expected in several places in the central part of the country. Several flights to Budapest have been cancelled due to the bad weather, writes Turizmus.com.

The DWD advises everyone to avoid the outdoors and travel by car if possible. The meteorological service has issued warnings for parts of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Saarland, the state of Hesse and the Bavarian region of Unterfranken (Lower Franconia). In these areas, there is also a risk of hail.

At Frankfurt Airport, no aircraft have been able to take off since midday on Wednesday.

Due to persistent sleet, it is not possible to de-ice the aircraft safely before take-off. Earlier, 570 flights out of a planned 1,047 had already been cancelled.

At Munich Airport, more than 250 of the 650 flights scheduled cannot take off, and several flights at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport have been cancelled, mdr.de reported on Wednesday afternoon.

According to Airportal, Lufthansa reduced its schedule at Frankfurt and Munich airports on Wednesday, January 17, and Thursday, January 18, due to the expected disruptions.

The operators of both major airports have reminded affected passengers to check the status of their flights with the airline and not to depart for the airport if their flights have been cancelled.

Several flights to Budapest were also affected by Lufthansa’s reduced schedule on Wednesday

with the cancellation of flights LH1334, LH1336, and LH1338 from Frankfurt at 9:50 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 1:55 p.m., and Munich flight LH1676 at 12:35 p.m.
