Series production of the Terramar model of the Spanish Cupra brand started at Audi Hungaria’s Győr plant (northwestern Hungary) on Friday.
Michael Breme, Chairman of the Board of Audi Hungaria, said that the Győr plant is now the first to produce a “sister brand” vehicle. The production of the new model will contribute to the high capacity utilization of the plant over the next five years, he added.
According to Zoltán Les, Member of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria responsible for vehicle production,
the Terramar will be built on the same production platform as the Audi Q3.
István Joó, CEO of the National Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA), stressed that the Hungarian automotive industry directly employs 150,000 people and over 700 companies operate in the sector. The strength and innovative capacity of the sector is demonstrated by the fact that around 90 percent of its products are exported.
As of 2018, Hungary is among the top 20 exporting countries, accounting for 90 percent of world car exports.
Thanks to recent developments and investments to be completed in the near future, the number of cars produced in Hungary could double in a few years, to over a million a year, he added.
He also stressed that the production of the Cupra Terramar in Hungary is a recognition for the company and shows that it is worth investing in Hungary.
Audi Hungaria had earlier announced that it had been working for more than two years on integrating the Terramar into its production system, with the biggest transformation taking place in the body shop. The market launch of the Terramar will be 3,700 units, after which around 300 units will be produced daily.
The Győr plant plans to produce 770 vehicles per day, 60 percent of which will be Audi Q3 and 40 percent Cupra Terramar.
The Terramar will be available with five different powertrains in three different technologies: petrol, mild hybrid and the new generation plug-in hybrid. Both the petrol and mild hybrid engines are produced in Győr. Deliveries of the model will start in the last quarter of this year.
Audi Hungaria is a member of the Audi Group and the central engine supplier to the Audi and Volkswagen Group. In 2023, it produced 1,660,425 engines and 171,775 vehicles. It employs over 12,000 people in Győr and nearly 50,000 including service providers and suppliers.
