A crazed driver who went on a rampage is in detention awaiting a decision on his arrest after fleeing police at speeds of up to 200 kilometers on the M2 motorway. After a heroic deed, Sergeant Zsombor Gál restrained the dangerous driver, reports Magyar Nemzet.
A brutal chase lasting for kilometers was witnessed Tuesday morning by motorists on the M2 motorway near Dunakeszi (city located to the north of Budapest), as first reported by the BpiAutósok.hu portal. A madman was chased by the police, who was trying to gain a foothold with his Mercedes without number plates, sometimes at a speed of 200 kilometers per hour, without success.
The adrenaline was working, but I knew I had to stay calm,”
recalls Sergeant Zsombor Gál, the district officer of the Váci Police Station, who was driving the police car following the runaway driver.
Sergeant Gál noticed the car with no number plates while still in Vác, before the motorway slip road, with two of his colleagues beside him. He was not unfamiliar with the vehicle, having been caught several times before for traffic offenses or driving under suspension – the Sergeant knew that the driver had no driving license. Pulling up behind him, he made it clear he had to stop. However, the driver was uncooperative, stepped on the accelerator and headed for the M2 motorway.
Seregant Gál said he was thinking primarily of others during the pursuit – the people in the car, his companions and others, who were driving peacefully towards Budapest – and he was determined to keep everyone safe.
He knew that the driver was not going to stop voluntarily, he had to force him to do so without anyone getting hurt.
Once he managed to get in front of the pursuing car, he reduced the fatal speed to 50-60 km/h by manoeuvring and braking. The reinforcement unit that arrived in the meantime tried to stop the driver from both sides. Eventually the fugitive was ordered to stop.
Sergeant Gál kicked open the damaged door of the car and repeatedly ordered the driver to get out, who upon seeing the gun in the sergeant’s hand, did not react. He needed help, which the sergeant readily provided – with a gesture he helped him out of his seat. He was handcuffed on the tarmac of the M2 motorway.
Several types of drugs were found in the system of the driver. Moreover, the Mercedes was found to contain a scale for drug dosage and a few grams of drugs as well. It is not yet clear whether he was distributing the drugs or just consuming them.
The prosecutor’s office took the man into custody and questioned him on suspicion of assault on a public official, road endangerment, criminal damage, and offenses committed while driving under disqualification. Thankfully, no one was injured during the cinematic police chase.
