Starting from March 1, Semmelweis University (SE) will expand its patient care, research, and training profile to include rehabilitation, neurosurgery, and neurointervention.

Currently, the university has limited capacity in rehabilitation and neurosurgery, with the latter being temporarily available at SE’s pediatric clinic. The expansion of the rehabilitation specialty began with the integration of the former St. Rókus Hospital, followed by the integration of the Merényi Gusztáv site of the South Pest Central Hospital (National Institute of Hematology and Infectology) on November 1.

Neurointerventional surgeries and treatments, crucial for modern stroke therapy, have not been offered at the university until now.

By incorporating rehabilitation from the National Musculoskeletal Institute (OMINT) into Semmelweis University, a comprehensive range of musculoskeletal care will be available within one institution. This addition, alongside planned surgical-orthopedic and acute traumatology interventions, is expected to enhance patient care.

Additionally, the integration of neurology, neurointerventional, and neurosurgical care at the National Institute of Mental Health, Neurology and Neurosurgery (OMIII) will expand the university’s patient care profile to include adult neurosurgical and interventional stroke care.

Semmelweis University emphasizes the effectiveness of these specialties within a multidisciplinary environment as part of the triple function of education, research, and patient care.

As a leading institution of higher education in medicine, it prioritizes the representation of all specialties in its training structure. It is important to note that patient pathways and office hours will remain unaffected by these changes.
