Semmelweis University’s free symptom checker app, Semmelweis HELP, has been expanded to cover adult diseases such as ophthalmology, obstetrics, gynecology, and general practice, reports the University’s official website.
Launched in 2023, this app assists users in determining whether they should visit the emergency room, see a specialist, or manage symptoms at home. The app has over 187,000 users and now includes symptoms for more than 740 diseases.
Available on the AppStore and Play Store, the app’s latest update is backed by funding from Gedeon Richter Plc. and validated by the National Center for Public Health and Pharmacy.
Semmelweis University Rector Dr. Béla Merkely emphasized the app’s role in health education: “in the 21st century, patient care does not start in the doctor’s office but with health education, and this unique, free app helps with that.”
Gábor Orbán, CEO of Gedeon Richter, praised the app as a “useful tool” that can reduce the healthcare burden by helping patients better understand their symptoms before seeking medical care.
Dr. Cecília Müller, Chief Medical Officer of Hungary, noted that the app provides “reliable and controlled” health information to combat the spread of misinformation online.
The app’s content has been created by doctors and communication specialists from Semmelweis University, with features like a panel for entering blood pressure, pulse, and blood sugar values. Dr. Péter Krivácsy, Medical Director of Semmelweis HELP, emphasized the importance of focusing on acute symptoms, adding, “the app shows which level of health care should be contacted with a given problem.”
