During a memorial in Borša (Borsi), Slovakia, Miklós Soltész, Secretary of State for Church and Nationality Relations of the Prime Minister’s Office, reflected on the life of Prince Francis Rákóczi II (1676-1735) and the war of independence (1703-1711) he led against the Habsburgs, highlighting the importance of forging alliances with the nations of the Carpathian Basin.
The Secretary of State emphasized the significance of annual remembrance services for Rákóczi, underscoring how he embodied principles of respect and love for the nation, values that remain relevant today.
Recalling the prince’s youth when he initiated the war of independence, Mr. Soltész noted the support he garnered from various ethnic groups, including Hungarians, Slovaks, and Ruthenian, in the fight against oppression.
He attributed Rákóczi’s commitment to his upbringing by his mother, Ilona Zrínyi, who instilled in him deep patriotism and empathy for neighboring nations.

Despite facing betrayal and adversity, Rákóczi’s legacy teaches valuable lessons about perseverance and eventual reconciliation.
Soltész stressed the importance of seeking opportunities for cooperation and building alliances
with nations in the Carpathian Basin, emphasizing the mutual historical ties between Hungarians and Slovaks.
Highlighting the region’s need for self-reliance and peace among ethnic groups, the Secretary of State emphasized that maintaining such alliances helps deter interference from external powers. He concluded by stating that in today’s world, the greatest value lies in fostering peace and collaboration with neighboring nations.
