MTI-Hungary Today 2024.11.20.

Zsófia Koncz, Hungary’s Secretary of State for Families, highlighted Europe’s demographic challenges during an informal meeting of EU ministers in Budapest, held under the Hungarian EU Presidency.

“Population decline is the biggest challenge facing Europe,” Zsófia Koncz stated, pointing out that Europe is experiencing its lowest birth rate since 1960, with annual births dropping from four million to 3.88 million. She stressed that this issue requires a cross-policy approach, making it a key priority of the Hungarian Presidency.

The politician highlighted Hungary’s leading role in family support measures, describing the country’s initiatives as unparalleled within the EU.

No other EU Member State has as many family support measures as Hungary. This is unique in the world,” she said, underscoring Hungary’s commitment to tackling demographic challenges.

The meeting also focused on solidarity between generations and the role of active ageing. “We must harness the social and economic potential of active ageing,” Ms. Koncz said, emphasizing the contributions older people can make to families and society. Hungary’s “Care Watch” (Gondosóra) program, which has saved 33,000 lives, exemplifies the nation’s dedication to elderly care.

Fact

The “Care Watch” (Gondosóra) program is a free, 24/7 signalling service for Hungarian citizens over 65, offering assistance in emergencies and  with everyday issues. Unique in Europe, it connects users to qualified dispatchers who provide help with various problems, ensuring security for both the elderly and their families.

Koncz concluded by urging further collaboration among EU states to address demographic issues, stressing that Hungary remains committed to supporting families and fostering intergenerational solidarity as pillars of its demographic policy.
