This year’s August was the second warmest since 1901, HungaroMet Zrt. said on its website on Wednesday. According to the summary data of August, the 8th month of 2024 was much warmer than usual for this time of summer, as was the case for the other summer months.

As Hungary Today reported, this year saw the fifth hottest June since 1901, while meteorologists recorded the hottest July since the beginning of the 20th century.

The national average mean temperature for August was 24.53 degrees Celsius, the same as this year’s mean temperature in July and just 0.01 degrees behind August 1992, the warmest month since 1901, the report said.

They added that while warmer-than-average years have dominated the last decade, this year stands out as one of those, with a very extreme August more than 1 degree warmer than the second warmest August so far, in 2022.

The warmest was recorded in the southern parts of the Great Plain, the coolest in the higher parts of the country. The difference from the average was largest around Pécs and smallest in the north-east. During the first week of August, the daily mean temperature was 2-3 degrees below the 1994-2023 average, then increased day by day until August 13, stagnating at around 27.5 degrees on the hottest days of the month. After August 16, the daily average temperature slowly decreased, and by August 23 it had fallen to near the 1994-2023 average.

From then on, the weather gradually warmed back and remained unusually warm in the last days of the month, with August 31, 7 degrees warmer than the 1994-2023 average.
