Guy Verhofstadt MEP, former leader of the ALDE group and former Prime Minister of Belgium, who is about to retire from active politics, is coming to Hungary at the invitation of Anna Donáth, MEP for the progressive Momentum political movement.

The Association for a Hungary of Tomorrow, founded by Anna Donáth at the end of March, will soon hold its second conference. The conference will have a foreign policy focus and will be jointly organized by the Association, Momentum, and Renew Europe under the title “European Engagement: a national interest.”

Donáth will open the conference. The aim is to “discuss Hungary’s foreign and EU policy and its future potential directions and opportunities.”

According to Magyar Nemzet, Verhofstadt, who will retire next year, has been reportedly embroiled in ongoing scandals and corruption allegations. Verhofstadt’s name has also appeared in the Paradise papers. A database of more than 13 million documents published in 2017, revealed that the liberal politician was a board member of a transport company – for 60,000 euros a year – which used an offshore company to evade its tax obligations.
