János Lázár announced an innovative railway project aimed at transforming public transport in Salgótarján (northern Hungary). The Minister of Construction and Transport endorsed the S-Bahn (hybrid urban–suburban rail system serving a metropolitan region) plan proposed by Mayor Bálint Kreicsi, calling it a visionary yet cost-effective solution for the town’s transit needs.
In a video posted on Facebook, Mr. Lázár praised the initiative, emphasizing its simplicity and efficiency, pointed out Magyar Nemzet. The proposed S-Bahn would utilize the existing two-track railway running through Salgótarján, connecting Somoskőújfalu (northern Hungary) to the Salgótarján Industrial Park.
This system would operate exclusively within the city, easing congestion on local bus services and improving daily commutes.
The plan involves creating approximately five new stops along a 14-kilometer route, with trains running from morning until evening. Minister Lázár highlighted that these enhancements would include building platforms, renovating stations, and upgrading facilities such as toilets and underpasses. He stressed that these straightforward improvements would make a significant difference without substantial costs.
“There is no precedent for this in Hungary; it is a groundbreaking initiative,” the politician noted, underscoring the project’s innovative nature.
If successful, the Salgótarján S-Bahn could set a new standard for urban rail services across the country, enhancing local infrastructure and boosting the community’s quality of life.
