Robert Capa’s Never-before-seen Photographs on Display for Two Days Only

The Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy landings with guided tours and a display of never-before-seen photographs on June 5 and 6.

The Hungarian-born American photojournalist Robert Capa’s life’s work is marked by his capture of the Normandy landings of June 6, 1944. The photographer arrived on Omaha Beach with the first wave, and

his iconic photographs, of which only a few survived, are among the most powerful visual records of the landings,

reads the statement released by the photography center. As they write, the world’s first permanent exhibition of Capa’s life work opened last year in Budapest at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center.

The exhibition will feature a continuous screening of all the photographs from the Capa Center’s collection taken in Normandy in the exhibition hall, as well as several photographs that have not yet been on public display in the lobby. On June 5, art historian András Iván Bojár and on June 6, Gabriella Csizek, curator of the Robert Capa exhibition, will give guided tours of the exhibition.

Fact

Robert Capa was born Endre Friedmann in Budapest on October 22, 1913 and died after a landmine explosion in the Indochina War on May 25, 1954. The war correspondent, who had seen five battlefields, made his mark in his tragically short life: his photographs of the front and the rear created a school and renewed photojournalism. He was there with the soldiers and documented what happened in the immediate vicinity of death. It was with this proximity that he recreated the genre of war photography. It is also the subject of his famous saying: “If your pictures are not good enough, you are not close enough.”

Capa continues to have a major influence on the photojournalism profession and war photography to this day. His images and work have inspired and continue to inspire generations, the statement concludes.
