Road Workers’ Profession Made Perilous by Dangerous Drivers

Hungary Today 2023.09.27.

Last Friday, rescuers were called due to a car crash on the M7 motorway. At the indicated location, a Ukrainian vehicle towing a Bentley on its trailer collided with a traffic diversion vehicle of the Motorway Management.

The driver of the 80 million HUF (206,000 EUR) vehicle left with minor scratches, but the material damage was significant. A total road closure was in place at the affected section during the technical rescue.

As the Civil Guard and Firefighters Association of Szőkedencsi asserted, the case is not exceptional. Road workers are in constant danger because of careless drivers who scurry on the motorways. The official Hungarian road maintainance company (Hungarian Concessionary Infrastructure Development Ltd.) has complained that the road blocks were regularly hit by dangerous drivers.

For this reason, the Hungarian Roads “Our safety is in your hands” campaign has been trying for years to draw the attention of road users to the need to look after the people working on the road, as they are also flesh and blood people who are expected to get home. The campaign is still valid and tragically topical, as between 2016 and 2021, five fatalities, one serious accident, 43 personal injuries, and 32 quasi-occupational accidents were caused by irresponsible road users in the vicinity of public road work areas. Last year alone, there were 19 collisions with energy-absorbing structures and 26 with engineering vehicles. In 2021, there were additional two fatal work accidents caused by inattentive road users.
