Republican Candidate Donald Trump Refers to Viktor Orbán in Presidential Debate

Hungary Today 2024.09.11.

Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate and former president, and Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate and current vice president, clashed in the presidential debate in the US. In one part of the debate, the Hungarian prime minister was highly praised, reports Magyar Nemzet.

Former president Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris battled in the presidential debate over Trump’s place among world leaders after Harris said world leaders were “laughing” at him. Furthermore, the vice president underlined that some world leaders do not hold Trump in as high regard as he claims.

In response, Trump brought up Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, who continuously praised the Trump administration and has repeatedly emphasized that the Republican candidate could very quickly put an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war.

Let me just say about world leaders, Viktor Orbán, one of the most respected men, they call him a strong man.

He’s a tough person. Smart prime minister of Hungary. They said, Why is the whole world blowing up?” Trump noted. “He said, ‘Because you need Trump back as president. They were afraid of him. China was afraid.’ And I don’t like to use the word afraid, but I’m just quoting him. ‘China was afraid of him. North Korea was afraid of him.’ Look at what’s going on with North Korea, by the way. He said ‘Russia was afraid of him,’ ” the former president highlighted.

Quoting Viktor Orbán, Trump said there was no problem in the world when he was president, calling the current president, Joe Biden, a weak, pathetic man.

“Donald Trump has just praised the Hungarian prime minister in the presidential debate.” The Center for Fundamental Rights wrote about this on its social media page and shared a part of the debate on Facebook.

Zoltán Kovács, Secretary of State for International Communication, also shared the Republican candidate’s words in an X post.

Fact

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has met Donald Trump twice this year. The most recent meeting took place in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, and discussed the prospects for peace. This was a part of the Hungarian politician’s peace mission, coinciding with the start of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU. As reported by Hungary Today, Viktor Orbán traveled first to Kyiv, then met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, and finally held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on the issue of the war in Ukraine. Mr Orbán also met with Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington that took place between July 9-11, calling the Turkish President an important partner in the peace mission.

The meeting with Donald Trump was first reported by Bloomberg, noting that the trip to Florida heightens concerns that the Hungarian Prime Minister is mediating between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. However, Bloomberg‘s unnamed source stressed that the meeting was purely informal and the former US president did not ask the Hungarian politician to lay the groundwork for a Ukrainian-Russian peace deal or efforts to do so.
